A new international course in the Undergraduate School of Global Engineering is being offered since April 2011. All lectures are provided in English. The field of global engineering perceives civil engineering problems on a global scale, including environmental issues and natural resource concerns. The course aims to cultivate human resources capable of designing and managing civil infrastructures while considering global environmental issues around urban and regional areas, particularly in Asian and African countries.
This course is a 4-year program leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree. In the first and second years, students are required to take lectures in fundamental mathematics and physics, and also liberal arts. Scientific English and basic Japanese lectures are also available. From the second year, specialized civil engineering lectures begin, including those of environmental engineering and earth resources, and energy science. For the first three years, all lectures are given at Yoshida Campus, the main campus of Kyoto University. In the fourth (final) year, students with sufficient credits are able to join a research group and may relocate to one of the university's other nearby campuses, such as Katsura Campus or Uji Campus. Many of Kyoto University's civil engineering related laboratories moved from the main campus to Katsura Campus in 1996. The campus is highly appreciated by earnest students for its excellent research environment and experimental facilities. Each student will undertake research for their bachelor thesis at their designated laboratory. The thesis must be presented and examined in February of the final year, in order to graduate in March. A credit transfer system will be made available for students who wish to study outside of Japan for a certain period. Kyoto University's many international partnerships with institutions overseas provide students with opportunities to undertake study and research not only in Japan, but also in other countries. After completing this course, it is recommended that students continue their research in the master's and doctoral course programs. New master's programs in the Graduate School of Engineering provide education and research opportunities in English.
