Students successfully completing this course, conducted in English, are awarded a Master of Media and Governance by the Graduate School of Media and Governance (the same as awarded to students taking classes conducted in Japanese). International students join Japanese students in the same master's program and research projects. They are also offered elementary Japanese language classes. The Graduate School of Media and Governance covers a wide range of research specialties which are called "programs". Currently there are eight programs and applicants to the Graduate School of Media and Governance must choose one of them before submitting their application. Three of the programs are presently open to IADC students: Human Security and Communication, Cyber Informatics, and Systems Biology. The Graduate School of Media and Governance encourages students to conduct local investigation and fieldwork based on their individual research themes. Project courses are the core of the 'hands-on' research and learning for students at the graduate school. They are unique in the sense that they focus on active participation of students in practical and real-world social projects. They are typically taught by teams of faculty members. Students participate in advanced research directed by faculty members. Students can also propose their own research projects, and upon consultation with faculty members they can receive project course credits for their own research projects. Through the process of planning, conducting and evaluating research, students are trained both as career professionals and researchers.
