The International Program for Environmental Sustainability Science (IPESS) is one of the programs offered under the Global 30 project at Tohoku University. It is organized by the Graduate School of Environmental Studies (GSES). The main aim of this program (IPESS) is to nurture environmental experts and leaders who can take on active roles in the development of "Sustainability Sciences" involving advanced high-technology and policy planning and management at both domestic and international levels to meet the needs of society at present as well as in the foreseeable future. Spring semester is from April 1 to September 30 and autumn semester is from October 1 to March 31. As more than 20 subjects related to environmental studies are taught in this program, students can gain a broad knowledge of the environmental sciences. The medium of instruction is English. International candidates who plan to become actively involved in environmental issues are considered for admission. Adequate financial support will be offered taking into consideration the economic situation of students and their home countries.
The Master Course of IPESS is made up of compulsory core subjects, selective subjects, a thesis, and an internship. A Master's degree will be awarded after students satisfy the required conditions (complete 30 credits, including Seminar & Training 10 credits, and to succeed in defending the thesis). Students must complete the following credits from each section.
(1)Core Subjects A,B ( 3 subjects = 6 credits, compulsory subjects) : These are Introduction to Environmental Studies, Seminar on Environmental Sciences, Advanced Environmental Studies
(2)Selective Subjects (7 subjects = 14 credits) : Students have to take more than 7 subjects from about 20 selective subjects (3)Seminar and Training (10 credits , including thesis)
The Doctor Course of IPESS is made up of major subjects, Seminar and Training, a thesis, and an Internship. A Doctoral Degree will be awarded after students satisfy the required conditions (complete 16 credits including 10 credits of Seminar and Training and succeed in defending the dissertation)
(1)Major Subjects (2 subjects = 4 credits or more, compulsory subjects)
(2)Seminar and Training (12 credits) : This is compulsory for all students on the Doctoral Course.
(3)Internship (2 credits)
