The origins of chemistry come from the joy of making new materials based on knowledge. Natural materials have diverse structures and qualities with many useful physical and physiological activation properties, which human beings have had the wisdom to exploit since ancient times. The principal focus of traditional chemistry is the elucidating structures of various materials, clarifying their reactions, and synthesizing useful substances that exist in nature. Modern chemistry has advanced this scope further by creating chemical compounds that have new structures and physical properties, studying their qualities, clarifying the structures and the reaction mechanisms of organic molecules, and synthesizing biologically active substances. Thus, modern chemistry has come to assume the role of being the key science in the study of materials in the broad academic fields of both materials and life sciences. Along with developing new materials to create a prosperous and civilized society, it is also expected that chemistry will play an active role in solving environmental problems and thus it might have to be applied to ensure the very existence of mankind.
Our Chemistry Program will provide students with a world-class education in the area of chemistry. In order to provide a high level of expertise and wide vision, we have provided an integrated and systematic program for education across the School of Science and the School of Engineering in Nagoya University. To gain basic knowledge and experimental skills, we provide various lecure courses, practical courses, and experimental courses in the first three years. Lecture courses offered include Basic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry. More advaced courses such as bio-organic chemistry, bio-inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, solid state chemistry, quantum chemistry, material chemistry, and polymer chemistry will also be given. Forth year students will join research groups in the School of Science or the School of Engineering to carry out laboratory research for work on a Bachelor thesis.
